Never A Dull Moment

I don't tell too many stories about Jodie on this blog.  He doesn't mind me blogging at all, but he really prefers to stay out the spotlight.  Sometimes, though, a story comes along that I just have to share.  Jodie has a knack for getting into the strangest situations, and begrudgingly agreed to let me share his latest camping story, since I really need some blog fodder right now.  (Writer's block!)

This past weekend Jodie and his brothers went on a father/son campout with their dad.  They ended up not getting to the campground until it was dark, and immediately began setting up their tents.  As Jodie bent over to hammer one of his tent poles into the ground, he breathed in deeply...and inhaled a thorn.  Yes, you read that right.  He inhaled a thorn.  A thorn that just happened to be the width of this windpipe and therefore got lodged.  He started choking and making strange gagging sounds, so his brothers went to see what on earth he was doing.  He got to where he was able to breath, but kept gagging and coughing and wheezing, which I guess is normal when you have a large thorn stuck in your throat.  He tried drinking water (which I later pointed out might not have been the best idea.  He didn't like that too much and said I should try to get a thorn stuck in my throat!  I told him that it was highly unlikely that I ever would inhale a thorn...and now I'm knocking on wood!), but the thorn didn't budge.  He tried gagging himself to see if he could get the thorn to come up, but that thorn still wouldn't move.  His brothers and dad were beginning to wonder if they would have to take him to Urgent Care.  Jodie didn't care what they were saying, he just wanted to get that thorn out of his throat!  Finally, Jodie managed to sweep his finger down his throat and moved the thorn just enough that he could cough it up.  His throat was sore for awhile afterwards, but he survived without any damage to his windpipe.

I didn't actually hear anything about it until the next morning, when I was at my nephew's soccer game.  My sister-in-law asked if I'd heard about Jodie's fiasco, and I just shook my head.  Like I said, Jodie has a knack for having unusual things happen to him, so I couldn't even imagine.  Of course, I had to call him right away and see what exactly happened.  His reply?  "Oh...that..."  Jodie makes my life fun and interesting, but, honestly, there are some "interesting" things I'd rather not have happen to him!

OMG. I just told Brett the story. And I urged him to not inhale with his face near anything thorny next week when he's camping. How scary for Jodie! I'm glad he's okay. Terrifying situation!
